Wow! What a Show

WOW WHAT A SHOW
'
At the Kapa Haka Minifest there were a lot of schools from around Stoke.
When we got up on stage it was a bit scary because
everyone was looking at you. All the school's tried there best
at the Kapa Haka Minifest. At the end of the performances there was shared kai, but there was none left for the polite birchwood school children unfortunately. We even managed to get our photo in the newspaper.

Creative Learners

Our Principal's Challenge this term is all about being a creative learner.

We have been talking about what it means to be creative, and how we have already shown this.

Our thinking so far:

I think being creative is about by thinking outside the box. Maria

Creative is using your imagination. I showed I am creative completing my homework, where I made a three times larger tomato sauce can, which looks exactly the same and really nice. Hunta

Being creative is being arty and crafty. My calendar showed my creative side and showed the past, present and future we predict of New Zealand if we don't help our environment. Brooklyn W

To be creative you must come up with interesting and original ideas. This term I have been creative by doing lots of abstract art and drawings at home. Emily

Having good ideas for planning new fun games is thinking outside the box. Adam

To be creative you have to try new sports or a new game or activity. By Chloe

I think a creative thinker is someone who has a great imagination and uses it and someone who thinks alot about creative things and has lots of fun and they are also sensible and they are on task alot and love using their imagination just enough!!!

By Kiaya

I Think A Creative Thinker Is Someone Who Uses There Imagination and Is Not
Boring And Loves to Have Fun. But They Are Also Sensible With Their Choices
And Use Brainstorms So That Their Task Is Full Of Imagination But Just Enough To
Make It Interesting.

By Jabez

Being creative means you use your imagination when doing writing,
Maths, art, reading and computer work. It means you think for yourself and don’t copy others work. I was creative when I wrote my revolting recipe
and when I made my kiwiana item because knowone else used paint to make it look like there was real marmite in the jar.
by Breanna

A creative thinker is someone who can think about it in a very Imaginative way or do something differently to others.
jobs like being an Artist or a Painter are very good at this.
They can share their ideas, and they enjoy making things.

By Ruby

Being a creative  learner is when you think outside of the box!!! And when you create new things (and not just coping someone else)One part of being creative is doing something NEW and inspireing other people (like famous Artists,Singers & Actors)

The whole school has been working hard on KAPA HAKA.
We have learned lots of songs with Matua Tom.

In addition, Matua Tom and Mrs Wilson also picked out 11 girls to go to Lake Rotoiti  to perform a powhiri as a welcome to the principals conference. After the powhiri we had lunch on the grass and watched the eels in the lake. It was an extremely early start. We had to meet at Stoke School carpark at 7.00am! We had a great time!!!
The following girls were included in the group; Emily, Hunta, Ella, Indianna, Katie, Jordan, Mahina, Tia, Sinead, Yui, and Katelin.

Kiwi Flyer
The Movie

Last year I auditioned for the movie Kiwi Flyer filmed in Nelson. I waited two weeks and heared  my brother Jared got the part for the stunt double for the cheating Auzzie trolley, which my Grandad Gordan made. He also made the kiwi flyer trolley.

Over the two weeks in the holidays, my Grandad, my brother and I all help make a battery drill for my trolley. First we tried the first drill but it didn’t go as fast as the other drill. We went to Trafalgar park and went around the circle bit of the track. My trolley got to 57 km and my Grandad's friend Tim brought two trolleys for the battery drill challange. One was called Jaws and the other was Red Rack Racer 3. My one is called Lightningracer 2. The trolley Jaws is so small so I had real troubele fitting my legs in it and it was as slow as a turtle and it died half way round the track. When the day was over and when we were heading back home my Grandad brought me and my brother Jared McDonalds for lunch.

This shows the Auzzie trolley vs the First Kiwi Flyer, and the cast from the movie standing at the finish line.

On Friday Tevita from the Tasman Makos came in to Room 9 to teach some boys Gangnam style dance moves, he is really good.
After a while we had Ella’s pavlova. We took a photo because it was Ella’s kiwiana and Tevita had the job of cutting it up. Then we learnt some rugby skills and passing before playing a game of touch.

Poorman Stream

We went down to the stream and met Mel. She talked about the environment and how to keep our streams clean. After that we all got a paint brush, net and bucket to catch fish and insects to see how populated the stream was. Instead of catching an insect in my net is was a rat instead, YUCK!
We had so much fun exploring with Mel we wish we could go back again!
